Food to Watch Out for Children with Soy Allergy
The only way to manage soy allergy is to avoid soy and soy products. This can be tough because soy is a common ingredient in many foods. Always read food labels to see if the food contains any soy.
The products to avoid are not limited to:
- Soy milk, soy cheese, soy ice cream and soy yogurt
- Soy flour
- Tofu
- Miso
- Natto
- Shoyu
- Tempeh
- Soy sauce and tamari
- Edamame
- Soybean oil
Some of the highest-risk foods that need to be cautioned are:
- Cookies and baked goods
- Candy
- Ice cream
- Asian, African and other cuisine that often contain peanuts
- Sauces that cook with peanuts or peanut butter
Besides that, you may also need to look for other words on food labels that may indicate the product contains soy including:
- Soy lecithin
- Glycine max
- Hydrolyzed vegetable protein (HVP)
- Hydrolyzed plant protein
- Textured vegetable protein (TVP)
- Monodiglyceride
- Monosodium glutamate (MSG)
- Artificial flavoring
- Natural flavouring
